On Wednesday, most of Kererū went on a trip to the Imagination Station and Margaret Mahy Playground to celebrate their great leadership so far this year. We were very lucky that the weather cleared for us, and everyone enjoyed a day out having lots of fun.

Rewards
Today the teachers treated kererū students to an ice-block treat! The children who didn't have their name in the behaviour steps folder this week were very lucky! What a great way to cool off on a hot day!
Bad Jelly The Witch
Linkin wrote a story about Bad Jelly the Witch and drew an awesome illustration to go with it. Well done Linkin!

Kaupapa
Every afternoon the children break into 4 groups for kaupapa. Today, Kakariki learnt about observational drawing and sketching landscapes. We went outside and sketched the view outside the classroom window of Woolston Park and the Port Hills. We will turn these sketches into a Pepeha (Mini mihi) and display these to show where we live and go to school. Here are some pictures of kakariki enjoying the sun and sketching today.
2D Shapes Maths
2D shapes have been working extra hard during maths this week. After students have finished their work they go on Mathletics to practice what they have been learning. This can be accessed at home. Practice makes perfect!

Golden Time
Kererū children get the opportunity each Friday to have some Golden Time. In this time, students have choice of the learning they wish to do, provided they have completed all of their work. Ella, Caleb, Ruby and Tynesha chose to go and explore the new mound in the junior area and had lots of fun in the sun!

Rowling Writing
The Rowling writing group have been learning about free verse poetry and looking at themes and messages in poems. This is the shared poem they came up with as a class today. Can you guess what the theme/message is?
"How do you know me?
How did you get my number?
Help.
Clouded by a shadow of words
that stab me like a knife, covered in comments of shame.
I cry myself to sleep
as words spin around my head like a tornado.
Hearing bad words when I
walk, why are you doing this to me?
As it hurts me it also hurts
others.
I feel stranded on an island
of bad words, people don’t care about how they use words."

Welcome!
Kia Ora, welcome to the Team Kererū Class Blog for 2017! This is a place where teachers, students, and whanau and friends can view what Team Kererū have been up to in the classroom.
The 2017 school year has started off well in Kererū, we have all had a busy 5 weeks, and have all done some exciting things. The teaching team in Kererū this year are Whaea Jodi (K6), Whaea Sam (K6), Miss Haggitt (K5) and Mr Boyd (K5). We are also extremely lucky to have three wonderful learning assistants on our team; Anne, Whaea Fi, and Rose. They help make our day run smoothly and are always around to give extra help and support. We are also lucky to have New Zealand Graduate School intern Miss Crouchley in K5. Many hands make light work!
This blog will be used to update family and friends about what the children are doing in class, and for general notices and information. We hope that you all enjoy it and look forward to your comments!
